Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
